Biography
Etan Kohlberg was born in Tel-Aviv as the son of a pharmacist. In his childhood he learned music theory and piano playing. He spent his school years in Tel Aviv and New York and began studying Arabic as a teenager. From 1963 he studied English and Arabic at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, including Meir Jacob Kister , David Ayalon and Joshua Blue. After obtaining the first and second academic degrees (both summa cum laude ), he received his doctorate from Oxford University in 1969-1971 with a dissertation on the relationship of the Twelver Schia to the Companions of Muhammad, From 1972 until his retirement in 2006 he was a faculty member, since 1991 a full professor , at the Department of Arabic Language and Literature of the Hebrew University. He gave lectures, seminars and courses on Qur’an exegesis , classical Shiite literature, Sufi texts, medieval Islamic martyrs and Arabic calligraphy . From 1978-1979, he held a teaching assignment at Yale University and was a senior research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey . In 1993 he became a member of the Israel Academy of Sciencesappointed. In 2008, he was awarded the Rothschild Humanities Award and the EMET Orientalist Award.

Etan Kohlberg is married to violinist Bat-Sheva Savaldi-Kohlberg . His son Yaron Kohlberg (* 1983) is a pianist with an international career.

Scientific work
In his books and articles, Etan Kohlberg deals, among other things, with the thinking, history and religious literature of the Twelver Shia and the Imamites , with Taqīya in Shiite theology and religion. [1] He wrote a monograph on the Shiite scholars Sa’id Ibn Tawus (1193 to 1266), which at the time of the conquest of Baghdad by the Mongol ruler Hulagu in the capital of the Abbasid lived. [2] With the Iranian-French scholar of Islam and Shiism experts Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi he titled Revelation and Falsification ( “Revelation and counterfeiting”) CommentsHistory of the Koran text issued. He has written several articles for the Encyclopædia Iranica and the Encyclopaedia of Islam .
