Imam Hassan (as)

The Imam after the Commander of the faithful, Hazrat Ali, was his son Al-Hasan (Hazrat Imam Hassan A.S) the son of the mistress of the women of the worlds, Fatima, daughter of Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa, the Lord of messengers, may God bless him and his pure family. (Al-Hassan's) other name was Shabbar, Kuniyyat Abu Muhammad and title was Mujtaba Naqi Sibt-e-Akbar. He was born in Medina, on the night of the middle day of the month of Ramadan-ul-Mubarak, three years after the Hijra (624 A.D).

His mother, Fatima, peace be on her, brought him to the Prophet, may God bless him, on the seventh day in a silken shawl from Heaven, which Gabriel had brought down to the Prophet, may God bless him and his family. He named him Hassan and sacrificed a ram for him (in the ceremony of Aqiqa).

Al-Hassan was the most similar person to his grandfather Hazrat Muhammad P.B.U.H, in form, manner and nobility.

Fatima brought her two sons, Al-Hasan and Al- Hussain, (A.S), to his great father, at the time when he was suffering from the sickness from which he died."Ya Rusul-ul-Allah!" she said, "these are your two (grand) sons. Give them something as an inheritance."

"As for Al-Hasan" he replied, "he has my form and my nobility. As for Al-Hussain, he has my generosity and my bravery."

When Hazrat Ali Karam Allah Wajho died, Al- Hasan addressed the people. He reminded them of his right (to authority). The followers of his father pledged allegiance to him in terms of fighting those he fought and making peace with those with whom he made peace. They rushed forward to pledge allegiance to him as successor. That was on Friday on the eleventh of the month of Ramadan-ul-Mubarak in the year 40 H. (660 A.D). Then he assigned (the posts of) the Tax Collectors and he gave instructions to the Governors (of the provinces). He sent Abdullah bin Al-Abbas to Basra. He took charge of all the matters.

When Mu'awiya bin Abi Sufyan learnt of the death of Hazrat Ali, and the people's pledge of allegiance to his son, Al-Hasan, he sent a man of secretly to Kufa and a man from Banu Al-Qayn to Basra. They both were to write reports to him to undermine affairs for Al-Hasan. When he learned of that, he ordered the Himyari to be brought out from among (the tribe) of Lakhm in Kufa. He had him brought out and executed. (Al-Hasan) wrote to Al-Basra, ordering the Qayni to be brought out from among the Banu Sulaym. He was brought out and executed.

Then Al-Hasan wrote to Mu'awiya about this happenings and he replied to him. There followed between him and Al-Hasan, correspondences messages and disputes regarding the right of Al- Hasan, to authority.

After some clashes in which Al-Hassan was seriously injured, Mu'awiya wrote to him about a truce and peace treaty. Al-Hasan did not trust him. He was aware of his deception and his attempts at assassination. However he could find no escape from assenting to his demands to abandon the war and bring about a truce because of the weakness of his followers' understanding of his right, their corrupt attitude towards him and their opposition to him.. Therefore he bound himself (in a treaty) with Mu'awiya, who accepted all that and made a treaty with him to observe that. He swore to him that he would fulfill it.

When the peace between Al-Hasan and Mu'awiya was concluded, Al-Hasan, left for Medina. His total period of Khilafat was 6 months and 3 days, from 621 A.D to 622 A.D (22nd Ramadan-ul-Mubarak 40 H to Rabi-ul-Awwal 41 H). After reaching Madina he resided there, restraining his anger, until Mu'awiya had completed ten years of his administration. (Then) the latter decided to have the pledge of allegiance given to his son, Yazid, (as his successor). He communicated secretly with Ju'da, daughter of Al-Ash'ath bin Qays; she was the wife of Al-Hasan, to urge her to poison him. He gave an undertaking to her that he would marry her to his son, Yazid, and he sent her a hundred thousand dirham. Ju'da gave him the poison to drink but he lingered on sick for forty days. He passed along his (final) road in the month of Safar-ul-Muzaffar in the year 50 H (670 A.D). At that time, he was forty-eight years of age. His succession (to the Imamate) had been for ten years. His brother and testamentary trustee (wasp), Al-Hussain buried him with his grand mother, Fatima, daughter of Asad bin Hashim bin Abd-e-Manaf, in Jannat-ul-Baqi, Madina.

After the death of Al-Hasan, Mu'awiya gave Ju'da the money but did not marry her to Yazid. Instead he gave her a man from the family of Talha as a substitute. The latter gave her children. Whenever any argument occurred between them and the clans of Quraish, they would revile them saying: "Sons of a woman who poisons her husbands".

Al-Hassan married so many women. His only three wives became mothers of his 8 sons.

According to the author of book "Tazkarah-tul-Sadaat" names of his 3 wives are:

1) Khoula binnat Mansoor-ul-Frazia (mother of Syed Hassan Musanna).

2) Um-ul-Basher binnat Abi Masood bin Aqba bin Umar Al Badri (mother of Syed Zaid, Um-ul-Hassan alias Fatima Kubra, Um-ul-Hussain).

3) Um-e-Ishaque binnat Talha bin Abaid-ul-Allah Al-Teemi (mother of Hussain Asram, Talha, Fatima Sughra)

Mothers of Qasim, Umru, Abdullah and Abdul Rehman, were slave-girls.

I had a quick question.

You wrote:

Doesn't this contradict itself? How can he be said to "marry so many women" but yet have "only three wives"?

Which is it?

Thanks for your clarification!

Salaam Brother Talib
The article says Imam Hassan (as) had many wives , but from his many wives he only had children with 3 of them. So the other wives he got married to did not have children with him.

Ya Ali
Ya Hassan
Ya Hussain

salaams Mystic!

Thank you for the clarification!

I still have a hard time imagining that Imam al-Hassan (as) married many women. Because marrying alot implies divorcing alot and divorce is something hated by Allah. We know of the walayah of Imam al-Hassan. So, it's hard to believe that he, as a wali of Allah, would do something that Allah hates so many times! Allah praisies him many times in the Qur'an. And the Prophet (saws) says that al-Hassan is the most like him. Could we imagine the Prophet marrying and divorcing alot?! Allah forbid!

Plus for him to be married to those 3 ladies for the bulk of his life, how could he marry many women?!

Some reports have Imam Ali (as) telling the people of Kufa not to marry their daughters to his son because he divorces alot?! At the time, though, he was married to 3 women, right? So, the most he could marry is one at a time.

Keep in mind that the Ummayads and Abbasids were known to fabricate reports that denigrated the Ahlul Bayt. Maybe the reports that mention Imam al-Hassan (as) marrying and divorcing alot are examples of these.

Jazakum Allah Khayrun!

your brother,

Student
