Appeal

To all Human Rights Societies and Organizations
Dear All,

With all sorrow and grieve, we raise up to you our human appeal.
In the 26th of May 2005, a group of our armed political security pushed in to our house without any prior warning , turned it upside down, missed up everything in the house and kidnapped our under-aged child Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Mutawakkil (13 years old) from his mother’s hands who was screaming and yelling to the armed soldiers. But they didn’t show any kind of mercy toward her. Instead, they kept frightened ladies and children each in a separate room under weapon threaten for four hours.
We are really frightened because of these crimes and that horrible attack on the human rights which is unacceptable in all laws. These armed forces didn’t give any reason for this attack or behavior. . Although we didn’t know the charges against his bother Esmael, they took the child Ibrahim as a hostage until his brother appears.
As we appeal to you and all the human societies specially those which concern about human rights, local, regional or international. We’re asking you to do the necessary to get the child Ibrahim back to his frightened mother and his family. Please cooperate with us in our human tragedy.

Regards,
Ibrahim Al-Mutawakil’s Family
On behalf of them: Mr Muhammed Ahmed Al-Mutawakil

Urgent Statement
Issued in 27/5/2005
Sana'a, Yemen

The Yemeni Organization defending Rights and Democratic Freedoms condemns targeting and arrest of Mr. Ismail Mohammed Ahmed Al Mutawakel, one of the organization's activists, and the serious violations that his family has been subjected to. A group of armed persons kidnapped his brother the juvenile Ibrahim Mohammed Ahmed Al Mutawakel who has not exceeded 12 years old as a hostage on the 25th of May 2005. This happened after attacking his house and horrifying the women and children inside it. The armed persons attacked the house and took some possessions without any warranty or legal document and this has been confirmed by human rights organizations that are concerned of this repeated action.
These actions practiced on human rights activists is a bad omen which only reflects intolerance to legal and constitutional rights as well as not fulfilling obligation of strengthening and supporting advocates of rights and freedoms which is stated in all international conventions and treaties particularly the convention on human rights defenders which emphasizes the role of the society as well as individuals and groups to strengthen and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms (General Assembly 144/53 dated 9/12/1998).
We call all civil society organizations concerned with human rights and freedoms to take urgent action to stop the violations and provide legal protection and security for Mr. Ismail Al Mutawakel and all his family members , namely the release of his brother to apply the child right convention and Law of Penal procedure as well as release of all other juveniles under arrest and all those arrested or imprisoned illegally.
We demand from the Country's president, parliament, Shura Council, General Prosecutor, and Ministry of Human Rights, to take urgent legal actions to reveal the violations and prosecute those responsible for them.
We are confident that there will be a quick response to protect and promote human rights and fundamental freedoms as well as their activists.
The Yemeni Organization defending Rights and Democratic Freedoms

Plea - Appeal for Aid

My name is Ismail Mohammad Ahmad Almotawakiel, a senior student at the University majoring in computer programming. I am also preparing my final project for graduation, a program which has great benefit by protecting the Yemeni heritage and spreading Yemeni culture. This program is called Atlas manuscripts of Yemen.

I also work in this field as a teacher in some of the computer schools and also as a programmer and maintenance specialist.

In the morning of Thursday May 25, 2005, an official holiday , I received a call from my father telling me that an armed mob, without official uniform, claiming to be from security forces had forcefully broken into our home without any legal warrants.

They came in and terrorized all members of the household including my siblings who are children, my mother and father, my elderly grandmothers who both exceed 75 years of age; one being bedridden and ailing from weakened heart muscles and the other with diabetes and hypertension.
Those people did not respect the privacy of our home or the women, children and elderly who inhabited it. Instead, they threatened and humiliated them. They illegally searched our home in a savage fashion, looking for fictional evidence. When unable to find any, they increased their harassments and threatened to take my brothers as hostages.

My father told me that they have threatened to kidnap my litter brother Ibrahim who is 12 years old of age. In fact they did forcefully take him outside and lock him inside one for their cars. They also threatened to kidnap my 10 years old brother.

My neighbor, Khalid Alkolani, who always used to and continues observing and following me provocatively, called me and threatened me to return home and give myself up. He told me in a terrorizing tone “Do you want us to humiliate your father? You’d better come”. I replied to him that I do not know the reason for all of what is going on; then he said, “Come, then we talk.” Then he threatened to take my litter brother Ibrahim. So I told him for the sake of being neighbors and for the sake of my friendship with his brothers to not threaten the kids, my mother, grandmothers and not to take my little brothers Ibrahim and Ahmed. After some words he told me that he will release my brother Ibrahim from his car, but he never fulfilled his promise and he kidnapped him.

This situation has put me in great fear and horror where I really do not know why all of this has happened? Is it my fault that I cannot tolerate human rights violations, especially for those children and women who do not know how to defend themselves? So I decided to work in defending human rights through the Yemeni Organization to protect rights and freedom. Among other cases that I participated in is the focusing on the non legitimate criminal court, the case of freeing sister Intisar Alsaiany, and the case of the young detainees whose rights were violated. Such violation would be condemned by local and international laws. All my work is done within the constitution and law.

The whole situation is strange and until now, I have not being able to recover from the barbaric act committed against me and my family, and the violation of all our rights that should be protected by the law.
Those who committed such act did not care about my beloved brother Ahmed, who was frightened, crying, trying to hold and hide behind my father seeking a little safety. Where are their hearts as they were dragging my brother Ibrahim to their car, hearing the crying and screams of my mother, sisters, and grandmothers?

Are these actions human or moral? Where is humanity and where is the law which should protect my rights? No religion or tradition in the world would allow such act. Do I deserve all of this because I work and devote myself and time, to protect and help women and children who do not know how to protect their rights and who need help when their human rights are being violated? I would rather be killed than to have put my family in such situation where their rights being violated.

All my activities within the human right organization are conducted within the law and constitution. The primary principle of mine is to condemn all types of violence from any source under any circumstances and now I am suffering an injustice, something I always strived to help others from.

They want to make me silent and to shut down voices of people who are active for human rights so they can continue to abuse people’s rights who do not know how to defend their rights. But I swear to God that their act will not silence me and will not stop me to continue protecting human dignity and a safe life. We will not keep silent in front of disgraceful law and constitution violations against citizens who have no means to protect themselves. The savage act will increase our determination to go toward protecting human rights and freedom that they want to prevent people from. And the freedoms that I have been deprived from like many others before me and after me.

All what we need is justice and implementing the law on all people and to condemn violence with all of its types and to implement national unity principle among citizens of this country.

I call for respect of human rights and implementing the law. I was supposed to be called officially by the national special security who is supposed to protect my legal rights and the call should have been on a regular day and not on an official holiday where all government offices are closed, I would have responded to such call without any hesitation. Now, after all that has been done to me and my family of aggression and violation of the constitutional, local and international laws; laws that the Yemen government has accepted and certified,. I demand the following:

1. The opening of an investigation with those who burst into our house and caused fear and terror to my family members.
2. Taking full responsibility for all that has happened to my family from psychological and health damage that may cause dangerous health consequences.
3. Request from the attorney general to declare the allegations against me in front of lawyers.

I now appeal for help to all local and international human rights organization to show solidarity with me in the human rights field and to stand against armed bursting into homes and random arrest that has being spreading in a horrible way in all areas of my country.
